Role

Architect

Restoration of the distinctive Parrott House on Middle Street will provide much needed housing in downtown Portsmouth, with 21 rental units over 19,000 square feet. Union soldier Captain William F. Parrott built this early second empire style brownstone mansard in 1865, as a sophisticated and powerful expression of 19th century resources. ARCove provided technical and historic restoration guidance for the exteriors, gaining local historic district approvals. The elaborate but deteriorated carved brownstone, wood trim, and slate roofing were fully restored. Interior apartments will come into compliance with current codes with improvements to finishes, fixtures and MEP systems. Interior plaster details framing entries, windows and stair halls will be preserved. A restrained approach to maintaining existing features and smaller unit plans ensured a controlled construction budget and schedule.
