ARCove’s rehabilitation of a mid-19th century commercial building converts two floors of office space to seven residential apartments in Portsmouth’s Market Square. A strong demand for housing paired with decreased office demand makes adaptive reuse a good fit. With a prominent location across from the iconic North Church steeple, the penthouse design celebrates the existing classical facade and contextual leaded glass fan transoms and dome. The result is a dramatic formalized roofscape with a barrel-vaulted penthouse addition. The convex, fan shaped stained glass storefront offers panoramic views over Market Square and western city skyline while introducing abundant daylight to the interior living spaces. Thermal envelope improvements, along with all new mechanical systems ensure high performance operational efficiencies.
